A BEAUTIFUL STORY
500 years of tradition - and where the name "Wastlwirt" originates
The oldest reference to the parent houseof Wastlwirt**** Romantik- und Genusshotel dates back to 1499. Hermann Weber established right here in St. Michael - as one would say today - a gathering point for citizens. The first official document dates from 1510. It documents the first change of ownership of the inn. A total of 14 other hosts turn out in the next 320 years as avid hosts to friends, neighbours, traders and thereby business travelleson the Nockalm Tauern Pass route, which was already used by the Romans, over the Alps.
In 1830 Sebastian Georg Moser took over the village inn as the 16th landlord, whom the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria awarded already in 1745 "for everlasting time the landlord rights" (Maria Theresa concession). Moser gives it its current name: „Wastlwirt“ – Wastl being nothing more than the vernacular name of his first name Sebastian.
As first direct ancestor of
today's host family Rudi und Elfi Baier, the brewery owner
and master brewer Jacob Wieland buys the country inn in
1887 and poured out there for the first time the home-brewed
„Wastlbräu“. Beginning of the 20th century
the daughter Maria Wieland takes over the heritage. Thus begins a
successful "reign" of women lasting more than 50 years. It
ended in 1966 when Hermine Resch passed on the business to her daugther Josephine and
her husband Rudolf Baier. The two built a completely new hotel next to the
old inn with 50 rooms, dinning and meeting room and
indoor pool.
Rudi & Elfi Baier have been hosts for over 25 years
In 1984 Rudolf and Josephine Baier
handed over the house to their son Rudi, which he has been running since then
with his wife Elfi. The ever-changing needs of up to 100 guests
require from both
to date conversions and extensions and new ideas that have only one goal: to create
an optional environment, in which the guests feel comfortable and are perfectly cared
for in a familiar atmosphere.
Today tried and trusted and modernity, tradition and future visions are
found harmoniously with each other in the Wastlwirt.
Tradition has been maintained for centuries
And according to ancient tradition the following apply for centuries:
- The locals still gather around a regular's table. Hotel guests
are cordially welcome.
- People passing through and business people on the nearby A10 Tauern motorway and
the B 99 pass route through Obertauern and the Katschberg find here their relaxing
quarter at an intermediate stop.
- Tourists from Austria and many other European countries appreciate the
romantic atmosphere and enjoy the local cuisine with recipes
from grandma's kitchen and modern creations of the chef.
- At the bar there is again a „Wastlbräu“.
- And in addition to the family's daughter Manuela is
again a real „Wastl“- the son Sebastian.
